And is to send quantum keys in 2026

From the corresponding project page:
“The ‘Quantum Key Distribution from a CubeSat to the Ground (QUBE II)’ consortium aims to develop a microsatellite capable of performing a complete quantum key exchange. The platform consists of low-cost microsatellites, known as CubeSats, which are equipped with the necessary technological components for this purpose. To achieve this, the project partners are integrating novel technologies for generating quantum keys into the CubeSat platform and combining them with high-performance optical communication systems. Building on the predecessor project QUBE, miniaturized quantum components are being developed that can withstand the extreme temperatures and radiation in space.

These are then integrated into a microsatellite weighing approximately 10 kilograms. The research team is also setting up a ground station that ensures efficient optical communication with the satellite and enables the transmission of quantum states. In this project, leading research groups in the fields of optics and quantum communication are collaborating closely with innovative companies and institutions in the fields of communications, satellite, and space technology.”
