As announced in the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27863, Microsoft is “[…] adding support for post-quantum signature algorithm ML-DSA in NCrypt and BCrypt cryptography API surfaces, as well as Crypt32 certificate APIs. Three variants are supported, ML-DSA 44, 65, and 87.”

Putting this very technical information into the context of Microsoft’s general strategy on PQC, especially the addition of PQC algorithms to SymCrypt, their core cryptographic library, Principal Lead Product Manager Aabha Thipsay announced making PQC capabilities available for Windows Insiders and Linux, by SymCrypt-OpenSSL version 1.9.0, on May 19th.

Updates to the Cryptography API: Next Generation (CNG) libraries and Certificate and Cryptographic messaging functions bring the PQC algorithms ML-KEM and ML-DSA into the Windows Insider program. Linux users are anticipating PQC updates in the SymCrypt provider for OpenSSL 3.
